sub-departments of the Public Works Department. The former Office of Crown Lands and Survoys has boon divided into two sopereto sub-departments, that of Crown Lands and that of Surveys. The work of those two branches is
differont and tho now grouping is moro logical and will tond to increased officiency. At the same ting the former Resumptions Office, the work of which is closely connected
with the Crown Lands Offico, will be absorbed into the
lattor Office. The maximum salarics of certain posts in those sub-departments as ro-organised have boun raised, but as few of the holdors had yet roached the maximum of
their respective posts before the re-organisation there will be no increase in oxpenditure noxt year beyond the normal stipulated incromonts.
In view of the limitation of the program.o of works gonorally it will be possible to effect savings in Personal Emoluments. Somo posts can be abolished and in
other casos on a post becoming vacant, it can be left
vacant for the prosont. I havo alroady tolographed to
the Socrotary of State requesting that the selection of
candidatos for vacant posts should not be proceeded with.
This will mean that the staff of the Public Works Departmen
will be reduced considerably. When times aro botter and
more works undertaken it will thon bo possible to oxpand
the personnol by filling up vacancies.
G
Chiof amongst those abolitions and vacancies I
would mention, in the Architectural Offico, throu
Enginours, ono Temporary Enginoor, ono Chief Draughtsman,
ono 2nd Class Draughtsman, fivo 4th Class Draughtsmon; in
tho Electrical Office the Superintendent of wireless Tolography, throo Wireless Operators, nine Apprentice Oporators, ono 2nd Class Oversoor; in the Gonoral works
Office nino 2nd Class Foremon; in tho Public Health and
Buildings Ordinance Office
